THIS JUST PISSES ME OFF
I was reading Parry Shen's post about Asian Americans feeling insulted because he played a Korean and the role he was given along with other Asian Americans were stereotypically insulting. I guess you could say I'm not happy about Asians being portrayed that way either, but what am I going to do? Can I lead some revolution that is going to way the media thinks? Can I take what was already air and un-air it?
But I'll tell you what I can do! I can choose to
1) Make films that are less stereotypical, make it good and show it to the world
2) Give my Asian Americans some support
3) Quit Whining about how I feel repressed and limited because of my skin color
4) Quit Whining about how I COULD HAVE GOTTEN THE JOB if the media wasn't portraying my culture this way and that way
5) Quit calling people like Parry Shen and Justin Lin or whoever 'sellouts' just because they are more successful than othersC'mon guys, you spend so much time hating and being pissed off with something that you forget to do the things you love! Whether it's making films, stock broking or fingernail biting, use your energies to be constructive....not destructive
You know what, I'm sure there are more Asian filmmakers out there than there are actually roles for Asians. Go out, make your film (and hopeful it's a film people can enjoy and not have to sit and hear somebody whining about cultural repression and stuff), and most importantly, be proud of who you are....maybe you might think you are a minority in the US, but you are a majority in the World.
So with all the complaining about stereotypes, there are people complaining we are NOT stereotyping enough, like this! (Click here)

oh wow, Faye Dunaway?
Summer 2006!!!
So, i'm assuming you are some sort of film maker? Just kidding. I try to classify myslef somewhat as a film maker. I am currently filming a movie that I write call Epidemic. It is very low budget and very very geurilla style. I have some production photos up on my xanga. I checked you out on imdb.com and the movie looks great. Cant wait.
Haha wow - you have a lot of defenders!
stupid closeminded people on those boards - I never go anymore because they're full of people who don't get it... you keep doing what you do, and I'm looking forward to the film
Bai Ling is a freaking whiteworshipping sellout whore
Yea, how can Parry be so apologetic and apathetic?
he is such a pushover
*sigh* people hate success so much don't they....oh hey ric2, I checked your profile and I like your interest!
Interests: Sleeping and thinking. Sometimes thinking about sleeping
Very nice and hardworking life you got there. People like Parry and Bai Ling may be 'sellouts'...whatever that even means. People in my country call me sell out for coming to make movies in America, so I'm assuming all Asians who are in America are considered 'Sell Outs' too. ric2, the word 'sell out' is just a shortcut to thinking, it's just a shortcut (or) excuse not to get up and do something. To use those who have succeeded inspire and learn from them...their success, their mistakes.
And you know what, your comment on 'whiteworshipping' is very insulting indeed. If people treat you like a minority, maybe it's because you don't give them that respect. You talk about Asians being portrayed correctly in media and all, but yet, you slam 'white' people. For goodness sake, you're in America! And if you don't give people the respect, why would you expect others to give you the respect. Your comment on 'whiteworshipping sellout whore' is the very essence of why people make films about Asians who get pissed off when their 'kind' goes out with white men. Whether you like it or not, you are one of those stereotypes, you get pissed at those movies because they force to look at the other side of the mirror and you don't like what you see.
I'm sorry that you are such an angry person to peolple that you don't even know. You sit and sleep and think but do nothing with your life. You know what's the best job for people who sit down and do nothing...that's right...a cashier at a grocery store...and you wonder why the media portrays us that way. I'm ashamed you are even asian.
